CARNIVAL NOTES.

(-BY THE 0.5.) There was a very large attendance at last night's meeting of the Carnival Committee, and some (important business was transacted. Mr W. McLennan presided. A letter was read from Mr Jas. F. Thurston stating that it was the intention of the teachers of the Taihape District High School to present f|he Carnival Committee with a New Zealand Ensign, to be auctioned at the combined snorts gathering, to be held on Labour Day, 25th October. On the flag it is proposed to inscribe the names cf the teachers and ex-pupils i of the scjhoc-1, those who have gone to I the front, those who are at present in C3inp. and those who have enlisted. (As far as Mr Thurston could judge : ther e would be over fifty names on the flag. Mr Thurston also wrote to the effect that lihe pupils of his school had voluntarily offered to go without their prizes this year so that the prize money could be donated to the Wouned Soldiers' Fund. The money for the prices was to have been raised by means of a school concert. The teachers now offer to run the concert in the interests of the Carnival. Both offers were accepted, and a hearty vote cf thanks carried by acclamation to The Organising Secretary informed Mr Thurston. the meeting that the Taihape Gymnastic Club had intimated their intention cf giving a gymnastic display on Thursday, the 21st October, in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The tickets for the entertainment will be equally distributed amongst the various Queen Committees, and it was proposed to make an admission charge of two shillings and one shilling. So the committee disposing of the most tickets would, of course, reap the biggest financial benefit. The offer of 'the Gymnastic Club was accepted.and a hearty vote of thanks passed. The question of whether the executive should still continue in office in view of the fact that three delegates )from each candidate's committee had been appointed as a central committee evoked a very protracted discussion. It seemed to be the unanimous wish of the meeting tjhat the executive should still exist, and many complimentary references were made to the good work they had alreadjy achieved and the successful manner in which they had launched the Carnival. Eventually th e following resolution, moved by t(he Mayor (Mr A. L. Arrowsmith) and seconded by Mr O'Sullivan was carried unanimously, and amidst much applause "That the Central Committee consist of three delegates from each candidate's committee and the present executive. It was resolved that all art union and raffles in connection with the Car. nival close on Saturday, the 30t|a October. My wounded soldier friend heaved this story off his chest to me this morning. One of the New Zealand boys at Gallipotli had, "done in" his boots, and he was determined to get another pair. He had noticed that the Turkish officers usually sported excellent foot-gear. He crawled out of his trench in the twilight one evening and did not return till early the next mornings » We all thought you were dead, Bill. What on earth have you been up to?" "Well," replied Bill, "it was I like this. Yer see I take eights, and I had to shoot seventeen of the blighters afore I could get a pair to fit me-" The supporters of Miss Forde have i decided to abandon the concert and dance which they proposed holding in the Town Hall on Monday next. They : are 0 f opinion that it would be hardly fair for them to exploit the town in view of the fact that three of the competing Queens are local residents.
