BOROUGH COUNCILS.

LYTTELTON. The Lyttclton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) presiding. Others present were: Crs .1. 11. Collins, O. S. Morris, M. .1. Miller, G. A. C. Whitford, J. ,1. (lower, and J. R. Webb. On the motion oi' Cr Miller, seconded by Cr Collins, it was decided to adopt the resolution of the Waitaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, regarding medical inspections bcong carried out by the officers of the Health Department instead of by local bodies. The Nerson City Council forwarded o resolution to the effect that local bodies should not contribute to technical education, as the provision of funds was a matter for the Government. It was decided to let tbe letter lie on the table. The North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote regarding the resolution asking the board to urge the Government (II to promote legislation to allow hospital boards to borrow money for the erection of permanent buildings, and (2) to subsidise all moneys so raised. The council decided to take no action in the matter. The North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board reported the existence of the following cases of disease in the l.yttelton district during the month of July: Diphtheria one, influenza one, pneumonia three, and measles two. Mr J. Preston, meat inspector, notified that there were slaughtered at the l.yttelton abattoir during the month of July 102 cattle, 10 calves, 719 sheep, and 50 lambs. Two of the cattle bad been condemned and one partly condemned. The ChriStchurch Domains Board wrote expressing appreciation of the council's : kindness, in not charging any commission on the board's levy. It was decided on the recommendation of the Lighting Committee that owing to the increased cost of meters and the low price ot Id per unit charged for current for electric irons, that where meters were in use lor that purpose they be removed anil a flat rate of 1 - per month charged.

NEW BRIGHTON. A meeting of the.New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present :—The Mayor (Mi- F. Kibhlewhitc), Crs C. Israclson, W. H. Bellamy, F. Muirson, H. Browning.vß. Stokes, J. Bissett, F. Sincock, J. Gamble, E. Leaver. The North Beach and Waimairi Burgesses' Association wrote pointing out the daligcr of an existing post in tbe centre of the footpath near the §zone Cafe, also the necessity for numbering houses in North Brighton. The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. G. Coatcs) advised that the New Zealand llivers Commission, which has recently becift investigating the question 1 of river erosion and flood damage in various parts of the Dominion, has brought under his notice the > urgent necessity for the proper control of willow-planting along river banks. The letter was referred to the Reserves Committee. ■> The following resolution was endorsed from the Nelson City Council :-»-"That the Minister of Education be written to and Informed that the council does not consider it is in the. province of local bodies to provide funds fey technical education, and that owing to this being of national importance, the Government should undertake the whole of the expense of education." The member for Avon (Mr 1). G. Sullivan) advised that the Postmaster-General will not buy the corner site for the Past Ollice, hut will place on this year's Estimates a sum for building a new post ollice on the present site. The Hon. 'J. G. Coatcs stated in regard to the comer site, that he preferred it, .but that it was u question of money. It was resolved that Mr Sullivan be thanked and congratulated for his efforts. The Finance Committee reported that six building permits had been issued.since last meeting, to the value of £2128, making a total to date of 03 permits, valued at £18,192. The Works Committee reported that in connection with the condemnation certificate forwarded by the District Health Officer It had decided to serve the necessary notice on the owner of this property, giving 1) I in until August 30 to show cause why this building should not lie condemned. j Mr J. \. Flesher wrote stating that the ! council had not in any way prejudiced its | position by endorsing the Britannia Estate subdivision plan. In connection with the North Domain syndicate. Berry Street extension, Messrs H Stringer and T. f.ester waited upon the council and explained why the work had been held 'up. The committee decided to recommend the council to-accept the sum of £IOOO from the syndicate, this amount J to be held as guarantee that the required I work in Berry Street is carried out.
