SNOW AND RAIN.

WINTRY CONDITIONS RULE. Decidedly wintry conditions have set in this week, and in many districts snow has fallen. Early this morning there was a slight fall of show in the city, but it soon disappeared. The Peninsula hills have caught the full force of a south-easter, and since Thursday four inches of rain have been recorded at Aharon, the total for the month being 10 inches. Christchurch has missed this heavy fall, although so jar August has been a particularly wet month, 1.703 in. having been registered. Snow set in early last, evening at Ashburton, and by midnight the ground in the sheltered parts was white. Owing to the wetness of the soil about Jin only covered the ground at 9 a.m. to-day, but the indications then were for further occasional showers. The rainfall (including snow) to 9 a.m. was 4.') points, making HL'9 points for the month. The barometer registered 29.8.'! deg., and 7 deg. of frost were recorded. Reports from Springburn state that the snowfall is not heavy at the foothills, where the depth is about l*in. But the fall on the hills is very heavy. The fall is reported to be practically general throughout the district. Snow also covers the upper levels of the Peninsula ranges. Snow has fallen at Kirwoe, and is also reported in most North Canterbury districts, although on the lower levels rain .showers have prevented it from covering the ground. The bark country districts, in some cases, are well coaled. At the Clarence Valley about nine inches were reported yesterday, and there were further snow showers. !
