BOROUGH COUNCILS.

SUMNER. The meeting of the Sumner Borough Council held last evening was attended by the Mavor (Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C.I. and Crs C. Benjamin, T. Dryburgh, F. Gill, H. C. Jamieson, F. R. Piercy, C. M. Roswell, T. E. Whitfleld and H. J. Vates. The report of the Finance Committee stated that the gas manufactured during the month of April amounted to 762,250 cubic feet, being an increase of 172,050 cubic feet over the corresponding month last year. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board's levy for the current year was £590 0/5. The previous year the sum was £562 14/8. The report was adopted, the Mayor remarking with regard to the latter clause that it was hard to sec where the increase in the levy would stop. The Works Committee stated -that . the Mahr Road had been repaired in places, and the tarred macadam portion at the foot of Clifton top-dressed. The committee recommended that consent be given for the use of a right-of-way between the properties of Messrs Watson and Johnson, m Wakefield Avenue. The report was adopted. A resolution forwarded by the town clerk of Runanga to the effect that in view of the existing coal shortage, the Seven and Nine Mile coal seam should be developed, was approved. An application by the Sumner Brass Band for the payment of £2O stated to be due for municipal concerts was .held over in order to ascertain the relationship between the council and the band. « WOOLSTON. , The Woolston Borough Council met last evening, when there were present: The Mavor (Mr C. Hill) and Crs ,1. C. Hobson, L. Hart, T. E. Radcliffe, H. McLachlan, S. T. Owen, W. R. Blazcy, and D. Mcßae. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hobson, it was unanimously resolved:— "That the council place on record its appreciation of the services rendered to the borough by the ex-Mayor and ex-council-lors, and that a letter be sent to each of them, conveying this resolution." The Mayor stated that he had attended a meeting of the Peace Celebrations Committee, and that all arrangements were well in hand. The council decided to support the resolution of the Runanga Borough Council; urging the Government to develop recently-discov-ered coal scams at the Nine Mile Bluff, and Cr Owen tabled a notice of motion relative to the nationalisation of all coal mines. Mr G. A. Virtue wrote, complaining of the hissing noise from an exhaust steam pipe at the glue works. The town clerk reported that the manager stated that some alterations were contemplated, and that he would do what he could to abate the nuisance. It was decided not to send a delegate to the Town-planning Conference in Wellington. The Mayor and Crs Hobson and Hart were appointed to represent the council on the Woolston Fire Board. ' !
