Time of placed horses: 4.40, 4.48, and 4.45 2-5. THE TROTTING DERBY. LOCANDA DILLON'S EASY WIN. Seldom since its inception five seasons ago has so much interest been evinced in a contest for the New Zealand Trotting Derby. Jewel Loconda's withdrawal left but a trio to contest the classic, and as High Admiral was palpably lame, the issue was practic--1 ally confined to Embracer and Locauda Dillon j the former being installed an odds on favourite. Both got through pleasing preliminaries -in their characteristic styles, Embracer pacing unconcernedly, while Locauda Dillon was full of vim. .

j The trio came along to their first call in 1 excellent line and when the flag fell they ' were practically on terms. Bursting away as if on a half-mile mission, Locantla Dillon was soon right out in front, almost pulling Pringle out of the sulky. Coming to the stand for the first time, Pringle checked his mount, who hobbled under restraint, and not a few good judges were inclined to think that he was in trouble. Embracer gradually closed up and when half a mile from home he got to the leader's wheel, a shout went up in the Oaniaru representative's favour. For a. furlong there was litttle between them. Then Locanda Dillon forged ahead again, and turning into the home straight Embracer was being driven to keep his place. He responded gamely enough under pressure, but could not make the least Impression on Locanda Dillon, who scored in most decisive style in 3.3.1 t-5. Had there been anything In the flrld capable of extending the winner he would certainly have reduced that time considerably. Locanda Dillon was bred by his owner, Mr W. H. Robins, of Methven, and had previously, placed the Great Northern Trotting Derby to his credit. He is a nicelyturned gelding, showing more than average quality, with a torrent of speed. After the race the winner .was decorated with the blue ribbon by Mrs A. S. Duncan, the function being, heartily appreciated by the huge crowd that thronged the enclosure. a Just after the start High Admiral crossed Embracer and both horses suffered some interference. For this J. Bryce, High Admiral's driver, was fined £lO. This incident prejudiced Embracer's prospects, but it is very doubtful if it affected the result.
