PERSONALS.

Sir George Clifford returned to Christchurch from the north this morning. Dr J. A. McKiunon returned from Wellington by this morning's ferry steamer. Mi A. Goodhart, manager of the Barnet Glass Company, was a passenger by the Maori from Wellington to-day. Mr A. W. Bennett, general manager in Australasia of the New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington this morning.

His Excellency the Governor-General will leave Auckland for Wellington early next week, to present medals and decorations to returned soldiers and next-of-kin.

The Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and will remain here till Saturday night, wlten he returns to Wellington.

Mr W. I'. Spencer, chairman of the Belfast School Committee for seven years, has been nominated as a candidate for the vacancy on the Canterbury Education Board caused by the retirement of Mr T. W. Adams.

The retirement on superannuation is announced of Mr Arthur Calvert, who, for 17A years, has been in the head oflice of the. Inspector of Machinery Department at. Wellington. Mr Calvert was farewelled by the staff of the head office, and on behalf of the staff throughout the Dominion Mr Robert Duncan, head of the department, presented "the retiring officer with a purse of sovereigns and a silver-mounted, engraved walking-stick.

Some little time ago it was rumoured that Corporal J. H. Bennett, the wellknown Canterbury and New Zealand representative cricketer, had lost • his right arm. That rumour has reached Corporal Bennett, in France, and he has written asking that it be contradicted. He has quite recovered from the injury to his hand, and when his letter left France he was in the best of health and spirits. Corporal Bennett, who left New Zealand with the Bth Reinforcement, wishes to be remembered to all his old comrades; he would like to hear from them.
