NEWS IN BRIEF.

All the rivers of Canterbury were reported clear this morning. “We don’t merely look upon a hotelkeeper as non-essential, but as more or less of an evil at the present time,’’ said Mr J. S. Evans, S.M., chairman of the First Canterbury Military Service Board, this morning, when an application from a hotelkeeper, for extension of time, was before the board. The hearing of the case in which Alma Mavis Elson (Mr L. A. Dougall) claimed £5 0/ in respect of a motor accident from D. B. Edwards (Mr J. A. Cassidy) was concluded in the Magistrate ’s Court yesterday, before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £SO. The case H. Lloyd (Mr F. W. Johnston) v. the New Zealand Glue Company (Mr M. J. Gresson), a claim for £O, was also heard. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £3 12/-. A meeting of the Kaiapoi Riverside Carnival Committee was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. 11. Blackwell) presiding. Satisfactory reports were received from the various committees. It was stated that efforts were being made to arrange for an exhibition of flying. The Caledonian Society’s pipers and dancers will be present, and the 13th Regimental Band will also play selections. There will be various competitions. Mrs Bruges, of Christchurch, will again assume her role of “Grandma,’’ and her capacious pockets will contain many prizes. The 1 ‘ Soldiers ’ Diary, ’ ’ published by Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, has been received in an amended edition. All the good features remain, but the prefaces and appendices have been corrected and brought up to date. That is to say, most of them have; though we cannot help noting and regretting that the very interesting table of pay and allowances ignores the alterations introduced when Parliament last met. In spite, however, of that unfortunate omission, we can think of no more useful present for a friend in khaki. For those who wish to send their gift by post a secure little box is provided, the cover being printed and ruled in readiness for the number, rank, and name. Easter Holidays.—The Retail Drapers have arranged to keep open till 9 p.m. on Thursday prior to Good Friday, 29th, and till 6 p.m. on Easter Saturday. .1 Indian and Side-car, good as new, £59; 3§ h.p.
