In the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., one first offender for drunkenness was fined 5/-, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. The New Zealand Methodist Conference, held in Wellington last April, appealed to the 'Methodist congregations of the Dominion to raise the sum of £10,1)1)0 for foreign missions by October "•I. The effort has been taken up with zeal, and it is now announced that the sum of £10,622] has been received. A 19-ycar-old volunteer —Frank Palmer, engineer, y.M.CA—and two 20-year-old reservists —lan A. Sinclair, clerk, 14 Church Square, Addiugtoij. and Cyril Biggins, warehouseman, 13 Andovor Street, Mcrivalo —have registered for enlistment at the Christ-church .Recruiting Office. The anniversary services in connection with Knox Church Sunday School, Bealey Avenue, will be held to-morrow, when'the Rev. \V. T. Todd, of Lyttelton, will preach in the morning and evening, and the Rev, Harry Johnson will conduct the service at i! p.m. Special hyiiiiis will be sung by the Sunday School scholars at all services. An organ recital will lie given in His Majesty's Theatre by Dr Bradshaw (city organist) to-morrow, at H.:!0 p.m. Mrs .John Frascr will contribute vocal items. The recital is.in aid of the Patriotic and .Red Cross Funds. The organist and those attending to the doors are giving their services free, so that the fluids may benefit as largely as possible. _ Mr T. A. B. In the case of Frank Taylor (Mr Cuningham) v. .lames Durkin, a. debt of £4 10/6, an order was made for the payment of 2/- a week, in default four days' imprisonment, In the case Caroline YVrenn (Mr F. W. Johnston) v. George Blazey, a claim for £(> f>/4, an order of 5/- a week was made. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Dr Albert. Martin, a well-known medical practitioner, died last night. Three days ago, while performing an operation, he was scratched by a pin, and blood-poisoning ensued. I'r Martin was born in Wellington, anil was a son of the late Hon. John Martin, M.L.C. He is survived by a wife, son, and daughter. He was 57 years of age. Air Geo. Scott, in his report to the Technical College Board of Governors last evening, made the suggestion that the college should raise a fitting memorial to the old students who had given I heir lives for their country. This could take the form of a department where, all the students would be given the opportunity of receiving a thorough physical training on the best lines. Mr Scott said that, personally, he. was prepared to donate £35 for this purpose. The matter was referred to the Finance ! 'ommittee.

The first municipal band concert for the present season will be given in the Victoria. Square Rotunda on Thursday next, when Derry's Private Band will •.jive the following programme:—War March of the Priests (Mendelssohn); ■election, "Cinema Star" (Gilbert); 'lance descriptive, "Ghost Dance" (Salisbury); piccolo solo (soloist, A. flutton), "Through the Air" (T)amm); overture, "William Tell" (Rossini); selection, "Pink Lady" (Caryll); valse, "Barcarolle" (Fetras); inarch, "By !lick" (Henry). The usual meeting of the Avonside Nursing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was held last Thursday evening, Mrs Rhodes, lady superintendent, was in charge, and there was a .;ood; attendance of members. After having practice in roller bandaging, etc., members had stretcher drill, and »vere: afterwards questioned on "Home Nursing." During the evening Mrs 'Jwynn was unanimously elected divisional secretary, in place of Miss Cooper, who has resigned. It was decided not to hold the usual weekly'parade next Thursday, as members are at- • ending Mr Wilford's lecture on Tuesday evening, ami will also be on duty it the Show next Thursday and Friday. An examination was held at the Municipal Baths under the auspices of the Royal Life Saving Society, when four candidates from the Girls' High School were examined by Dr M. Fere and Mr 11. Broward. The pupils all passed the tests successfully. Dr Fere expressed the opinion that the whole of the water work was admirably executed. One young lady, Miss O. M. Ashley-Cooper, passed with honours, and Mis!'s E: B. Ritchie received creditable mention. The whole performance.rellected credit on their instructor, Mrs Bambery. The awards were as follow: —Bronze medallion, Misses K. Mclntyre Johnston, E. B. Ritchie, Z. T. Miles, "and 0. M. AshleyCooper; proficiency certificate, Miss E. B. Ritchie.

The box plan for the Musical Society's benefit concert opens on Monday, November 5, at. 9 a.m., at Milner ami Thompson r s. In the popular song cycle, "In a Persian Garden," appropriate decorations will be used. The performers are Madame Gower Burns, Miss Marian Woodhouse, Mr Rex Harrison, and Mrs. P. P. Osmand Smith (accompanist). Dr J. C. Brawshaw will play a pianoforte solo, Mozart's "Fantasia in C Minor." Madame Gower Bums will sing the beautiful solo from Massanet's opera "Manon," and Mr Rex Harrison will sing "Erl King." The Symphony Orchestra, under Mr A. Worslcy, will play a selection of "II Trovatore," ami also "Love Duet" and "Banco" from German's "Gipsy Suite." A chorus of .'!') ladies' voices, conducted by Mrs W. Wilson, will contribute some part-songs. Miss Lilian Harper and Miss Alice Gibb will assist with accompaniments. A large quantity of delicious home-made sweets is being prepared for sale in the hall.
