SUMNER AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last night, the following being present: —The Mayor (Mr J. B. Laureuson) and Crs G. VV. C. Smithson, A. Fryer, T. Whitfield, W. J. Lawson, A. E. Rankin, and the Hon. John Barr. The receipts for February amounted to £353 3/8, and payments to £913 12/1. The debit balance at February 28 was £IO6B 8/8. The rate collections for the current year have been satisfactory, the amount collected to date being £OOI7 12/5, leaving only £47 11/!) outstanding. It is expected that this small amount will be reduced by the end of the financial year. The following accounts were passed by the council:—District fund, £l4Ol 5/6, and electric loau, £2IG 17/11. The Technical College Board of Governors applied for a subsidy, and it was decided to grant £lO. The Works Committee reported that it would be necessary, when funds permitted, to link up several dead ends on the water mains, in order to improve the water supply by keeping it in circulation. The report was adopted. The committee reported that work was being carried on by the council on the main road at (he foot of Clifton. Arrangements were also made to [dace a man permanently at Kedeliffs to attend to the streets and water channels. Messrs Atkinson, Knox, and Barty asked permission for a variation in their proposed subdivision. The permission asked was granted. The Electric Works Committee reported that satisfactory progress had been made with the works, and the current, would be turned on for pumping and Street lighting. The Mayor and councillors wilt attend the formal opening, which will take place on Monday, March 10, at 7.30 p.m.
