A BAR-ROOM FRACAS.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., Arthur McGuire was charged with refusing to quit the Prince of Wales Hotel when asked to do so, with assaulting Arthur Michael Molloy (barman at the hotel), and with using obscene language. Mr Cassidy appeared for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. Senior-Sergeant Mathieson said that defendant went into the bar of the hotel on November 27, and, being the worse for liquor, was requested by Molloy to leave. lie refused, and was put out. He then kicked Molloy in the eye, and used bad language. Evidence in support of the Sergeant's statement was given. Mr Cassidy said that the altercation arose over a bicycle. The parties called each other liars, and a quarrel ensued. After defendant had given evidence his Worship said that he would issue a prohibition order against the accused and impose fines of 20/- in connection with the assault, and 40/- for using obscene language. The charge of refusing to quit the premises was withdrawn, as the evidence did not clearly show that the accused had been asked to leave. A week was given in which to pay the fine.
