BREAD ON SHOW.

BAKERS' COMPETITION. I ! The second bakers' exhibition ; under the auspices of the Canterbury I bakers and pastrycooks was opened ! by the Mayor (Mr 11. Holland) in the j Victoria Hall this afternoon in the presence of a good gathering of i spectators. The exhibition was in every re- | spect a success, the exhibits surpassing expectations both in respect to number and quality. The [judges commented in terms of high praise on the high standard of tingoods tabled. Declaring the exhibition open the Mayor said he noticed a very marked improvement on last year's effort. The entries were 500 in excess of last year's—an increase of more than 100 per cent. He questioned whether the exhibits could be excelled in any part of the world. He mentioned that in England bread was not being made from white flour and suggested that in this coutnry the bakers might consider the desirability of taking some similar action in order to cheapen the price of bread. He believed there was a very great waste in the distribution of bread, as well as of many other commodities. If the City Council could come to the rescue in the matter of delivery it would be of great assistance to the bakers and of assistance to the consumers. He was convinced that the Ctiy Council could deliver bread a great deal cheaper than the bakers could. He would like to have an opportunity to discuss this matter with the bakers. It was their duty to do everything possible to decrease the cost of living. It was announced that the championship had resulted as under:— F. Wright, Christchurch, B«.t points 1 J. Gould Ball, 87 points 2 The exhibtion will be open this evening when a series of competitions in cake decorating, etc., will be held. The exhibits will afterwards be sold in aid of the Red Cross Fund, to which fund all other proceeds of the exhibition will also go.
