COMPULSORY SERVICE.

THE FINAL CHANCES. BALLOT CONCLUDED THIS MORNING. [Special to The Sun.] WELLINGTON, November 18. Ninety minutes' work completed the ballot this morning. The district quotas were completed one by one till finally Group 19 alone remained, 2(> men being required. Five draws, involving the raising of nearly 1000 cards, were required to secure these men. When only nine were needed the Mayor of Wellington drew the marble which produced five cards from Group 19. Then Mr Reardon, the president of the Trades and Labour Council, drew the marble which completed the list. The Mayor, Mr Reardon, and Mr McCarthy bore witness to the absolute fairness and impartiality of the procedure. The Government Statistician informed your correspondent that he would begin checking the names on Monday morning, and the work would probably occupy several days, as the check would be very thorough.
