A FINE HURDLES RACE. The world's record for 130 yds hurdles, ]sscc, was equalled by Fred. Kelly, the famous American athlete, at a recent athletic contest between the universities of California and Southern Californa. The sJ,ory of the race is thus told in the San Francisco " Examiner":— "Included in the southern team was Fred. Kelly, the world's champion hurdler. Ho showed that he is still in his prime by clearing the high hurdles—his favourite event—in 15sec, and equalling the world's record, which he holds jointly with Forrest Smithsoii. Kelly hail strong opposition in the hurdles. Earl Thompson, one of his team mates, was credited with running the event in world's record time in Los Angeles three weeks ago, ami only a difference of opinion among the timekeepers prevented him from getting into the Smithson-Kelly class of recordholders. Thompson showed yesterday that he is a grand hurdler, forcing Kelly to losec to heat him, and (hen he was only a few inches behind. "The same race gave the California crowd a chance to cheer. Their captain, Ted Preble, was at the heels of the champion up to the last hurdle, and then faded away so quickly that Thompson came up and beat, him a foot for second place. When Preble gets into his best, condition there is going to be some going over the slicks at California. "The versatility of Fred. Kelly was shown when he won the I 00yds dash with his hands down, lie raced away from the field, and won by a good three yards. Ken Johnson, formerly of this city, but now a Southern California!!, finished second, and Bradley, another of the visiting team, took third place. The Blue and Gold supporters did not relish the rout of their sprinters." Kelly won the 100 yds dash ii 10 l-Ssce.
