PUBLIC SCHOOLS RUGBY SHIELD. A pleasant little function took place yesterday at Linwood School, when the new senior and junior shields given by the Canterbury Rugby Union for competition among the primary schools were presented to the Marist Bros, and Eicearton Schools respectively. Mr F. T. Evans, President of the Union, in making the presentations, congratulated . the Eicearton School on gaining honours for the first time, and the Marist Bros, on winning the senior shield for the sixth year in succession. Mr Evans expressed a hope that the lads would continue playing the game after they had left school, and so help to fill'the gaps caused by the departure of so many players for the front. Bro. Calixtus, in returning thanks, impressed on the teams that the real object of the game was not the winning of trophies, but the maintaining - of physical fitness and the fostering of good fellowship. Mr 11. North, Eicearton School, and Mr D. Shirlaw, Linwood, also spoke.
The teams were afterwards entertained to afternoon tea by Mrs Evans. The two shields are of handsome design, and reflect great credit on the manufacturer, Mr W. Bourdot.
