Dr Talbot arrived by the Maori to dav.

Colonel Smythe arrived from "Wellington by the Maori this morning. Dean Eegnault arrived from Wellington yesterday. The Hon. G. J. Smith arrived by this morning's ferry steamer. Colonel Cooper was a passenger by the Maori from Wellington to-day. Captain Harris and Captain Keenan left for Wellington last evening.

Dr and Mrs Morkane left for the north last evening to join the Remuera for London.

Mr M. J. Miller was to-day appointed deputy-chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board.

Rev. J. Mackenzie left for Gcraldine by the first express this morning to attend a Bible Class Conference.

Mr H. H. M 'Nelly has been appointed secretary for the Rangiora branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union.

Mr P. S. K. Macassey, Assistant Crown Law Officer, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs W. Duff, of Lyttelton, who have been on an extended trip to the North Island, returned by the Warrimoo to-day. Mr Sydney L. Thompson, a Christchurch artist, who has been residing in Brittany for several months, has had two pictures accepted by the Paris Salon.

Bishop Sadlier will leave Nelson in August on a six months' visit to England, where he contemplates delivering a series of lectures on the work of the Church in Australia and New Zealand.

Among the guests at Warner's Hotel are Mr and Mrs C. H. Ensor (White Rock), Mr and Mrs J. W. Stevenson (Wanganui), Mr and Mrs C. T. Rutherford (The Peaks), Mr John Roberts, and Mr A. C. Hanlon (Dunedin). Mr Snodgrass, for the past few years manager of the Napier branch of the Bank of New Zealand, intends to retire in July, and will be succeeded by Mr Batchelor.

Recent arrivals in Christchurch who are at present staying at the United Service Hotel, include Messrs A. G. D. Spencer (Woodbury), W. J. Allen (Auckland), Albert Neweombe (Dundee), Lindsay A. Russell (Dunedin), P. S. K. Macassey (Wellington). Visitors to this city staying at the Clarendon Hotel are Mr and Mrs Wm. Menzies (Menzies Ferry), Messrs C. F. C. Wilson (Barry's Bay), R. A. Anderson (Invercargill), W. C. Crane (Wellington), J. E. Gillies (Timaru), A. Matheson (Greymouth), and Gordon J. Reid (Wellington). The Rev. O. FitzGerald, of Avonside, left for Wellington last evening to join the Remuera for London. On Monday evening Mr FitzGerald was entertained by his parishioners and presented with a travelling rug, walking stick, and umbrella, while several gifts for Mrs FitzGerald were also given. Mr FitzGerald will be absent about seven months. Mr R. Moore was elected chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board this morning for the ensuing year. He was nominated by Mr F. Horrell, seconded by Mr M. J. Miller. Several speakers bore tribute to the services of Mr Moore during the past year. The Board was not unanimous, and several members advocated that a city member should be elected to the chair. There ,was no other nomiuation, and Mr Moore was elected. Mr Moore returned thanks for his election.

Among the passengers by the Makura to Auckland yesterday was Dr W. Moris Davis, Professor of Physical Geography and Geology at Harvard University, who has a world-wide reputation both as a geographer and geologist. ' Prof essor Davis is making a tour through the Pacific for the purpose of studying the origin of coral reefs. He has spent several weeks in Fiji, and intends visiting New Caledonia and the New Hebrides, touching at the Society Islands on his return home. In August he will join the Austrian meeting of the British Association, and has been invited to attend the supplementary meeting in New Zealand early in September.
