YOUTH AND CHURCH
WESLEY YOUNG MEN’S INSTITUTE “HITCH WAGON TO A STAR” The anniversary of Wesley Young Alen’a Institute was celebrated by a special Youth Rally in Pitt Street Methodist Church last evening. Alembers of the institute occupied the choir seats and led the singing. Messrs. It. Thorn!ey and Eric Halstead assisted in' the service. The preacher was the Rev. W. Walker, who based his sermon on Luke xii. 15, “A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things he possesseth.” “It was characteristic of Jesus that Ho always penetrated to basic principles.” said the speaker. “He was never satisfied to treat symptoms, but probed down to the disease. It was not His practice to interfere with petty squabbles or to take sides with contending parties, but to proclaim the principles of righteousness which should govern all parties. Behind the request of the man who asked Him to arbitrate between him and his brother on a question of property, Jesus perceived that the real cause of the trouble was covetousness. He therefore warned tlio people against this besetting sin.” Fullness of life had to do with the cultivation of the spiritual faculties. No abundance of mere things could ever satisfy the hunger of the soul. “Plan your life on a big and worthy scale,” said Mr. Walker, “but don’t get swelled head. Be inspired with lofty ideals, but face up to the hard facts of life. Hitch your wagon to a star, but keep your feet solidly upon earth. Resolve to rise in whatever sphere you undertake, but never crush down a fellow man By a fixed law a person moves toward that which is uppermost in his thought. A noble ideal will lift you out of self-interest into the richer and fuller service of mankind.” Aliss Mvra Alonk sang “Come Unto Him,” and Professor Charles AIooY officiated at the organ. —
