CAN THISTLE BEAT Y.M. ?
Celts and Corinthians Clash
THE big attraction at Blandford Park tomorrow will be the meeting of Y.M.C.A. and Thistle, when the Scots will try to lower the Young Men’s colours for the first time this season. Last Saturday Thistle vanquished Onehunga at home by four goals to one and should give the leaders a hard game tomorrow. In the early game Celtic meets Corinthians and, after the latter’s 3—o victory last week, the Celts will have to he prepared for a lively tussle. Ponsonby meets Manurewa at Devonport and Trams play Onehunga at home.
Tomorrow will be the next-to-last game in the first round of the championship, and Y.M.C.A. still figures at the top of the ladder without having yet tasted defeat. Last Saturday the draw with Ponsonby was the first Y.M. has missed, and everything points to it maintaining its record tomorrow. Thistle, however, has put up some impressive performances this season, and is the type of team to effect a surprise at any time. It will be of interest to see how Kay and Chalmers shape against their last season’s teamniatesi and the result may be closer than anticipated. Celtic and Corinthians are both promising young clubs with plenty of good talent coming on and improving with every match. The Celts‘put up a stubborn fight against Trams last Saturday, when the score-board was blank at half-time, and only a fatal weakness in front of goal spoilt the Celts' chances of taking a point, from the transporters. Corinthians showed greatly improved form last week by downing Manurewa with a three-goal win, and should make a beter showing tomorrow than in their previous games. Although Trams failed to field a team against Y.M.C.A. in the Chathafrn Cup tie on Wednesday night owing to sickness and injuries, the transporters should be able to raise a side strong enough tomorrow to prove too good for Onehunga, and at Devonport the Ponies ought to find no trouble in securing full points from Manurewa.
