AMATEUR ATHLETICS

EVENTS AT PAPATOETOE Keen interest was displayed in the two events run off by the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club on the Papatoetoe Sports Ground last evening. Large fields faced the starter in each event, and keenly contested finishes were witnessed by a good number of spectators. A splendid exhibition was given by ‘A. Robinson, a midget competitor, who started on the limit in the I,oooyds. handicap event, and held his place throughout the race. Although challenged in the last 50yds, he took it up and continued on to win by 10yds. Details of events are: 150yds. Handicap.—A. Dawson (4yds), 1: P. Anderson (Byds), 2; V. Smytheman (scr.), b. A Dawson breasted the tape with a lead of 4ft from P. Anderson, easing up. A stirring finish was witnessed between Anderson and Smytheman for second place. The former gained the verdict by inches only. I,oooyds. Handicap.—A. Robinson (85 yds.), 1; Jl. McKenzie (10yds.), 2; J. y. Wendgal (20yds), 3. A. Robinson held the lead throughout, and although seriously challenged, he put in a great sprint over the final 50yds and won by ten yards. McKenzie and Wendgal ran up tli.e straight neck and neck, the former gaining the decision by inches right on the tape.
