GRAIN MARKET QUIET

POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The grain and produce market is very quiet at present, with interest chiefly in the possibilities of the crops of next season. In regard Lo cereal crops, the general impression is that recent rains have wrought a big improvement and the new season’s supply will not be as short as had been anticipated earlier. Wheat especially has benefited and prospects are quite good, while oats have benefited also, though to a lesser extent. Quotations in each case show no change. Chaff stocks are light, but the demand continues quiet. On truck values are up to £5 17s 6d, and f.o.b.s.i. to £7 17s Gd. There is still a small number of old potatoes in stores at Lyttelton and Timaru, and buyers for them are very hard to find. A fair amount of business is being done with the farmers in next season’s crop. The prices are £3 15s to £3 17s 6d a ton on trucks for Whites, and £4 for Dakotas. Pollard and bran prices are unchanged, with the market steady for the former. Sales of bran are more restricted as tho weather becomes warmer. Tho rain experienced during the last two weeks or so has also improved prospects for all classes of seeds, in which a heavy shortage was formerly anticipated. Now, however, it would seem that the shortage will not be so general, and a firm market all round is anticipated. The price of pool wheat" is fixed at 6s 6d f.o.b. s.i. There is a good inquiry for good fowl wheat at 5s lid f.o.b.
