TE AROHA NEWS

With a view to gaining greater publicity for Te Arolia, the Chamber of Commerce has arranged with the Tourist Department to print 5,000 booklets setting out the scenic and sporting attractions. The compilation of the booklet is at present under way, and it has been agreed that the department take 2,000 and the chamber 3,000 copies for distribution. At the recent meeting of the chamber the question of a motor site for campers was discussed, members being dissatisfied with tho present Herriesville site. It was decided to support the Borough Council in pressing the Commissioner of Crown Lands for the acquisition of an area known as Baines Lease. The chamber resolved definitely to oppose the universal Saturday half-holiday proposal. The result of recent meetings of ratepayers to consider the offer of the Highways Board for tar-sealing portion of the Te Aroha-Hamilton highway was heard at the meeting of the Piako County Council. Cr. Walters wrote stating that the Waitoa settlers had met and as an outcome of the meeting he asked that tho question of raising a loan be left in tho hands of the clerk, engineer and himself. Cr. Stark reported that at his ratepayers’ meeting a motion in favour of sealing had been passed, and the meeting had also approved of a special rate on those properties facing the road, J>ut not paying any special rate at the present time. Cr. Kennedy stated that at a meeting of tho Waihou ratepayers a motion had been passed in favour of letting the question stand over for 12 months. After some discussion, Cr. Kennedy said that if the other ridings had agreed on the offer he had no doubt that ultimately his ratepayers would .also agree to the loan.
