FEWER RACE MEETINGS
AUSTRALIAN STATES CONSIDERING GRAVE ECONOMIC LOSS Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The Victorian and New South Wales Governments are considering the advisability of curtailing the number of horse and pony race-meetings. The Victorian Government proposes to reduce the number of racing days by 50. Mostly mid-week, suburban and pony meetings will be affected, which are adjudged responsible for the grave economic loss. Agitation has now begun in Sydney, where there is racing practically five days a week. The “Sun,” in an editorial, says the whole business of mid-week ponyracing is a reflection on the intelligence and serious purpose of the people of this State, providing horrible examples of 111-spent lives.
