NUT AND FRUIT SHORTCAKE Y wALF lb wheat meal, 3os but- #—■/ ter, three tablespoons brown * "*■ sugar, one teaspoon baking powder, pinch salt, one teaspoon spice, fruit. Rub butter into flour , mix in dry ingredients, add a little milk (about one table spoonful), turn on to floured board. Roll half and cover with chopped dates and nuts or dates and raisins. Roll the other half and place on top of fruit, brush with milk and sprinkle one tablespoon each of white sugar, chopped nuts and peel over. Press on lightly. Cook in a slow oven 20 minutes. Cut while hot. into neat fingers.
