PARNELL CRICKET
THREE NARROW DEFEATS A PROMISING PLAYER Although securing but three victories as against seven defeats, the position of the Parnell first eleven in the Auckland Cricket Association’s i senior A grade competition during the past season is not as serious as might be imagined, according to the report to be presented at the annual meeting of the club on September 12. Three of the defeats were by the extraordinarily narrow margins of one, two and five runs. This lack of success is attributed almost wholly to absence of stability in batting. P. E. AVhitelaw, in scoring 334 runs ! at 47.7 per innings, headed the batting averages, and was to be congratulated j on the attainment of these figures in I his first season as a senior grade player. A. Anthony followed on the j batting list with 336 runs—an aver- • age of 33.6. A. W. McCoy and F. Goodsir were the most successful bowlThe report commends the Auckland Cricket Association for its policy of importing high-class professional player-coaches. P. E. Whitelaw gained representative honours in all three Plunket Shield matches, while other members of the club won places in various Auckland touring teams. A. Anthony receives Mr. W. B. Upton’s presentation bat f.or scoring the first century of the season for the club Commenting on the lialf-hour summer time act rushed through before the General Election, the committee states that the previous season’s experience of the full hour was such that all members will desire its restoration when the question is once again before Parliament. The statement of liabilities and assets shows an excess of assets over liabilities of £IOB 6s.
