Teachers v. Ponsonby

KEEN RUGBY EXPECTED Interesting Fixtures GIVEN fine weather, there should be a large attendance at Eden Park tomorrow. The big attraction will be the meeting of Ponsonby and Training College. From the commencement of the season, when Training College made such a sensational start by beating Varsity, last year's champions, speculation has been rife as to the outcome when the Teachers face Ponsonby. Ponsonby has considerably improved on its early performances and on present form should run out winners, but Training College has always had a reputation for effecting surprises and the result is uncertain.

At present Ponsonby and Varsity are leading on the championship table and the result of tomorrow’s games will have an important bearing on the competition. Tomorrow will also see the last appearance of L. Hook, Palmer and McWilliams, of Ponsonby, who sail with the All Blacks next week for Australia. University will play City on No. 2 ground and this should result in another good game. A r arsity is also getting into form and should get the decision over City. The Grafton-Tech-nical College Old Boys game will be staged on No. 3, and this should result in an even go. Marist and College Rifles will play at the Showgrounds, and Grammar Old Boys will visit Onehunga to play Manukau. On its own ground Old Boys will find Manukau hard to beat. Tho most noticeable feature this year is the conspicuous absence of the scouting forward who shone in the loose but did very little hard work. Junior coaches have evidently taken to heart the lesson of the All Blacks in South Africa, and are drilling into their proteges the uselessness of this type of forward. The game’s in the blood. The name of Dave Gallaher proves it. New Zealand has still a. forward bearing tho name of the great Dave who led the 1905 All Black to victory overseas and who “went down” for the last time in the greatest battle of all. The reputation that Dave established is being worthily upheld by young Dave, a nephew, who shines of a Saturday as breakaway of the Ponsonby junior pack. If you see a rangylooking youth tearing down the field dribbling or tackling in great style—that’s Gallaher. Ponies have a promising senior half in young Conway, when he adds a stone or two to his weight, lie performed brightly at the base of the senior pack in the first match of the season, but tho club did the right thing in not promoting him until he cannot be thrown about so easily. Too many young players meteorically flash into senior grade prominence, and half-way through the season have the spirit so knocked out of them that they fade into oblivion. Conway has years of good football ahead of him" yet. He is smart in getting the leather to his backs with crisp passes from, the ground. One of tho most enterprising of the Ponies’ rearguard is R. Pope, first five-eighth. Nippy and quick off the mark, his style of play closely resembles Cammick’s. Always on the alert for chances to cut-in, he is a pretty exponent of the art, and he generally paves the way for action by the pack machine with his thrusting runs. With improvement of his defence he should be one of the best inside backs in the grade. * * * Eden had no difficulty in retaining its unbeaten record by defeating Ponsonby by a fair margin on Saturday, and the green and whites are now well in the running for the championship. Jack Ashby, wingthreequarter, is the best scoring man the team possesses. A straight, hard runner, he is always prepared to “give it a go.” It was this determination that carried him thi*ough for a couple of beautiful tries against Ponies on Saturday. D. Thompson, the five-eighth, is playing really first-class football. Very fast and adept at cutting-in, he makes good openings for his rearguard, and in addition is very sound on defence. “Snowy” Howard has been showing up prominently in the forward division lately. One of the most versatile players in the junior grade, is Harry Pierce, Technical Old Boys’ wing-forward. Very speedy, he follows every movement with commands ble persistence, and shows initiative by opening up passing movements among the backs from the lineouts; he joins in these rushes and handles the leather with the facility of a back. His forte is goal-kicking, by which he has earned his team many points in recent games. Roy Commons, Tech’s fast threequarter, is one of the cleverest backs in the competition. He combines football brains with physical ability in his work, and is undoubtedly one of the most promising scoring men in the junior game. He has a good defence, too, and is a particularly game and determined tackier. A. Keane a younger brother of the pair playing senior football, and W. Cobb, are ixie best of the forwards. Grafton received a bad fright from College Rifles on Saturday when, until the last 20 minutes, Rifles led' 3 to nil. By brilliant individ.> 1 work, however, two converted tries were registered in ten minutes. Evans, wing-threequarter, has been playing senior foot bull for the past two Saturdays, and if he turns out again tomorrow for the same team he will lose his junior status. He is a very strong runner, with plenty of spirit, and his loss will be a serious one to the already weakened backline. Scott, the -fullback, is handling and kicking very soundly and his tackling is very solid. Glenn and Littlejohn in the forwards are both hard grafters.
