Soccer Championship

FINAL ROUND COMMENCES Can Thistle Stop Trams ? AFTER a day of knockouts, the final round of the senior A championship starts tomorrow, and keen interest is centred on the meeting of Thistle with the unbeaten Tramways Club at JBlandfox’d Park, when a lively game is expected. The curtain-raiser will be between two of the strongest senior B clubs—Manurewa and Rangers. In the other senior A events Ponsonby crosses the water to play Devonport, Y.M.C.A. appears at Onehunga, and Shore meets Celtic on Cornwall Park.

The finish of the first round of the senior championship left the issue very open, with Trams two points in the lead from Ponsonby who, in turn, were a nose in front of Y.M.C.A., and the start of the last lap finds all the clubs keen and eager to improve their positions on the ladder. Those near the top are anxious to head off the leaders, and those near the bottom are equally keen to avoid the relegation to the B division which will be the unfortunate fate of the clubs occupying the two bottom rungs. Trams could only draw with Y.AI. in the last championship game, and Thistle knocked Y.AI. out of the Chatham Cup last week. The Scots defence will bo strengthened by the transfer of Carter from Celtic, but Ferguson will l>e missed at fullback. The clash between the two old rivals is sure to provide a hard game between two clever combinations of experienced players, and if Thistle’s defence proves sound its lively front lino may easily bring about Trams’ first defeat for many a long day. Ponsonby should prove too strong for Belmont at Devonport, and if anything happens to Trams the Ponies should be running level with them next week. Celtic and Shore should provide an even struggle in which' the improved Celts may claim revenge for the defeat in its first game of the season. Y.AI. and Onehunga is another open game as the Alanukau men are always hard to down at: home, but form points to a victory for Y.AI.
