CONTROL OF EDUCATION

CALL FOR UNIFICATION SUGGESTION BY CONFERENCE Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. After full discussion the following motion was carried by the Education Boards’ Conference today: “That this conference is of the opinion that some measure of unification of control of primary, secondary and technical education is necessary, and that, as a first step in this direction, a sub-committee consisting of the chairman of the Taranaki, Wellington, Auckland and Canterbury boards, and the secretaries of the Hawke’s Bay, Wanganui, Nelson, Otago and Southland boards be appointed to consider the unification of control of administration in each education district; and that each Education Board, after consultation with the bodies concerned, submit for consideration of such sub-committee the particular difficulties existing in its own district, and a draft of the suggested scheme which would be most suitable for the peculiarities of its own district.” The Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Education, who was present during most of the discussion, afterwards told the delegates he thought they had agreed on rather a clumsy form of achieving their end, and announced that ho intended to call a conference of representatives of every educational authority in New Zealand. He thought they could settle the problem in one day. He was satisfied there would have to be same system of unification of control, and he intended to bring it about.

Officials at present employed by the various authorities could rest assured that their positions would not be affected.
