MISSED HIS SHIP
SEAMAN CHARGED WITH DESERTING Rf'poriing to the shipping company’s office after his ship had sailed, George Newton was charged at the Police Court this morning with deserting from the Raranga. A representative of the Shaw-, Savill and Albion Company said that Newton. who was a seaman aged 36, had shipped on the Raranga in London. He had probably not meant to desert but had not reported at the office until after the Raranga had sailed. Newton assured the court that he had not intended to desert. In the opinion of the agent there was a chance of getting Newton away on the Otira. which was sailing from Wellington on Saturday. Newton was fined the amount of the expenses, 10s. As he had no money default was fixed at -IS hours.
