PLAZA AND TIVOLI
“NAUGHTY BABY” A regular cocktail of laughter is “Naughty Baby,” now at the Plaza and Tivoli Theatres. With Alice White ,as the principal ingredient in the cocktail, this lively story moves , along with a laugh a minute, due to the able direction of Mervyn Le Roy. Jack Mulhull is featured with Miss White, who has the role of check girl at the Ritzy Hotel, aiid who is herself more ritzy than the establishment. Alice has no idea of staying poor long, and when Jack comes into view with the intention of gilding; the Great White Way with a broad brush, she has a great yearning to help in his noble work. Jack plays the role of the heir to millions who is trying to spend a good part of it in advance. Alice is a regular four-timer, and “works” three of her humble neighbourhood admirers, one an Italian, the other Jewish, and the third Irish, for everything she needs to catch Mulliall. The roles of these “three musketeers” are admirably taken by George Stone, Benny Rubin, and Andy Devine. Gne works in a modiste shop, and borrows gowns; the other in a pawnshop, where lie can borrow jewels; while the other works in a garage, and can furnish cars. Tlie second big picture is “Scarlet Sea&,” a fast-moving anti colourful sea drama, starring Richard Barthelmess as a wandering sailor. Each new picture seems to add to Colleen Moore’s repertoire of dances. For “Synthetic Sin,"’ which is to open at these theatres on Thursday next, Miss Moore learned two new comic dances, on© a burlesque of a classic dance, and the other a humorous version of the hula, both of which she performed in the blackface make-up and amusing costume of a Topsy. “Synthetic Sin,” a laughable story of an innocent stage-struck girl seeking .sin as a background for her career, was written as a stage play, and was produced by John McCormick for First National Pictures. Antonio Moreno plays opposite Miss Moore in this comedy-drama, with Montagu Love, Gertrude Astor„ Edvthe Chapman, and Kathryn McGuire in other prominent 1 roles. “Michigan Ivid.” which will be the second big attraction on Thursday, is a fine’ Rex Beach story of the gold rush to Alaska in 1898, starring Conrad Nagel and Renee Adoree, supported by a large cast.
