ILLICIT RIDE COSTS £4O CONVERSION OF MOTOR-CYCLE For unlawfully converting to his own use a motor-cycle and side-car valued at £l2O, riding the outfit without having obtained a licence, and the ultimate crash of the combination, cost Thomas Woods, a youth of 17. over £4O in the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday. Lawrence Davidson stated that he found his motor-cycle outfit badly damaged in Princes Street, Otahuhu, and Woods in charge of it. The defendant had no authority to use it. The damage to the cycle had been estimated at £27. Sergeant Lambert said that Woods had not been before the court before, but lie had one or two lucky escapes. He asked that accused be put on probation, to allow the police to keep an eye on him. In ordering Woods to make good the damage done, £27. and inflicting a fine of £1 and costs for riding without a licence, and £lO and costs for conversion of the outfit, Mr. F. H. Levien, the presiding magistrate, told Woods that he could have bought a cycle for himself, but now he would be £4O out of pocket, and have nothing to show for it. If he made another appearance before the court, he could expect a term of imprisonment.
