TAUMARUNUI LABOUR PARTY (From Qur Own Correspondent) TAUMARUNUI, To-day. At the request of the Taumarunui Fire Board, the Borough Council has appointed Mr. K. H. Ross, superintendent of the Fire Brigade, as fire inspector for the borough. Acting on the approval of the Public Works Department the Manunui Town Board has planned the carrying out of extensive protection works along the Wanganui River bank adjacent to the Matapuna Reserve. The board intends to carry out tlie work by means of relief workers, and thus obtain a Government subsidy. The Taumarunui branch of the Labour Parity has resolved to make the following nominations for the forthcoming municipal elections: —Borough Council, Mrs.' C. R. Murray and Messrs. W. Seator, G. Wells, P. C. Brew and J. Pattison; Taumarunui Hospital Board: Mesdamea C. R. Murray and M. Walker. A conference is to be held at Te Kuiti on April 30 to deal with matters affecting the settlement-, of land along the Main Trunk line. All local bodies and associations affected will be in attendance, the Taumarunui Borough Council’s delegate being tlie Mayor, Mr. G. E. Manson. The Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club conducted a successful shoot, at which Messrs. G. Bretherton and J. O’Zanne, of Oliakune, were competitors. Results: Handicap Sweepstake, 7 birds; W. Hughes, A. J. Richards and E. Lightfoot, tied, and divided the stake. First i-uund of Harris Cup aggregate and sweepstake: W. Peek alid J. Brown tied fur first, and divided first and second money. Handicap Sweepstake, 7 birds, R. Harris and A. J. Richards tied, and divided. Gimcrack shoot, 7 birds: R. Harris, 1, with a quadruple tie for second: N. Prussing winning the shoot-off. At the monthly meeting of the club Mr. W. Caines was elected an executive member. It was resolved to interview the local stationmaster with regard to the construction of troutholding ponds on railway property near the station yards. Mr. G. Hickton, the club secretary, was presented with a cheque for five guineas as a mark of the club’s appreciation of his live work us secretary. At the annual meeting of the Oliura branch of the Farmers’ Union, Mr. C. J. Ryan was re-elected president, Messrs. W. J. B. Dougherty and F. Romayne being appointed vice-presi-dents; committee, Messrs. J. Roche, W. J. McKenzie, C. Friel, J. Penny, D. Esdaile, A. McKenzie, W. Sandison and D. F. McLeod.
