FIGHT FOR LIFEBOATS
FRENZIED PASSENGERS WRECK OFF CHINA COAST (United Service) HONG KONG, Thursday. Parties are still searching off Waglan Island for possible survivors of the China Merchants Steam Navigation Company’s steamer, Hsin-Wah, which sank there early yesterday morning. One of the survivors. Jacobsen, states that Captain Jensen remained on the bridge till the vessel foundered. Other reports show that the scene on board was one of utter confusion. Frenzied passengers fought the crew and each other for the possession of lifebelts and lifeboats. The ship, meanwhile, was in darkness through the engine-room being Hooded. It is now confirmed that there were two British officers on the steamer. They were Patrick Campbell, chief engineer, and Harold Beverage, second engineer. Hopes for other survivors have now been abandoned.
