U.S. TARIFF TO RISE

GENERAL REVISION BEGUN (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Tuesday. By agreement among the leaders in the House of Representatives and presumably with the knowledge and approval of the President-elect, Mr. Herbert Hoover, the wheels were set in motion to-day for a general revision of the tariff, which the Republicans believe will be undertaken at a special session of Congress before the end of 1929. The Committee of Ways and Means passed a resolution for beginning the hearing of evidence on 15 schedules of the Tariff Bill on January 7. It intimated that the tariff will be revised upward, and a completely drawn Tariff Bill will be ready for submission to the special session of Congress.
