Government to Own All A Class Stations
FEDERAL RADIO POLICY PROBABLE COST £90,000 (United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyrigftt) Reed. noon. CANBERRA, To-day. As a result of a conference between the Government and the Broadcasting Company, the Federal Cabinet has adopted a policy under which one company will supply programmes for the whole of Australia. Relay stations will be established at country centres, to enable persons with small sets to hear the city programmes.
The new policy contemplates that the Government shall be owner of the plant and equipment .of all A Class stations and the relay stations. The organisation or company is entrusted with the task of providing entertainment programmes throughout Australia, and will receive a percentage of the listeners’ licence fees, while the actual mechanical work of broadcasting will be carried out by organisations under contract with the Government.
The probable cost to the Government of taking over the broadcasting stations will be in the neighbourhood of £90,000. B Class stations receive no Government assistance, and no share of the listeners’ fees, as anticipated by them.
