RAILWAY LINE BLOCKED
GOODS TRAIN HELD UP RUMOURS OF ACCIDENT When a goods train stuck on the incline between Southdown and Penrose yesterday morning, someone got excited and thought that another railway accident had been “narrowly averted.” /COLOUR was given to the report by the fact that a passenger train, following behind, held part of the goods train until it had been divided and the first part taken up the hill. "Everything went according to plan,” said a railway officer this morning. “Never at any stage was there likely to be an accident, and no one was ever in danger.” The facts of the case are that a heavy goods train bound for .Auckland could not negotiate the incline between Southdown and Penrose. As the passenger train from Frankton Junction was coming behind it was thought that the goods could be pushed up the slope, but because of the slippery rails this was found impossible. The goods train was divided and the first half taken to Penrose. The rear ortion, in charge of a guard, was left touching the passenger train fintii the engine came back from Penrose. This action held up both trains and also blocked the level crossing for some time.
