WORKING MEN’S CLUB CELEBRATES JUBILEE

ABSENT POLITICIANS It is unfortunate for members of the Auckland Working Men’s Club that the number of Parliamentarians at the Jubilee smoke concert in the Town Hall concert chamber to-morrow night will ba limited. T HE demands of a party caucus in Wellington, however, must be obeyed. . The Hon. G. J. Garland. M.L.C., however, will be there to represent the Reform Party. The Labour Parliamentarians, as they have no appointment in the Southern city, should be there in full force. Both the Primate, Archbishop Averill, and the Mayor, Mr. Baildon, have engagements in Wellington of a nonpolitical character, ‘and must necessarily be absentees. The committee of the club has determined that the wives of members should participate in the Jubilee celebrations, and a special "ladies’ night” to mark this important anniversary will take place later. A Jubilee booklet is also being prepared for members It was the Marquess of Normanby who declai'ed the old club buildings open in Darby Street in 1878. Sir George Grey was elected the first president, a position which is now held by Mr. N. A. Ching, who will preside at to-morrow’s function Bishop Cowie blessed the new club, and others present included Colonel Whitmore, Colonial Secretary, the Hon. John Sheehan, Native Minister, Sir Henry (then Mr.) Brett, Mayor of Auckland, and Mr. Justice Gillies.

The club remained in its original quarters for 30 years. The committee eventually erected the present building in Kitchener Street. Sir Arthur Myers, then Mayor, laid the foundation stone in 1907.

In view of expansion the adjoining premises, the Art Society’s Tlall. was recently purchased. It will not. be long before the 1,100 members of the club demand increased accommodation.
