AUSTRALIAN MARITIME TROUBLES
UNION OFFICIALS PREDICT UPHEAVAL
(United P. A.—By Telegraph — Copyright.) Reed. 9.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. MARITIME union officials state that 'a serious industrial upheaval on the waterfront is threatened. They expect further developments in the next few days, when the announcement of the sale of the Commonwealth Line is made. It is anticipated that there will be a general dislocation of a-11 shipping services.
Commonwealth Steamship Owners’ Association, in a statement, points out that job control is being practised to enforce the demands made in respect of the Ulimaroa for an additional cook and sculleryman on the vessel. The owners claim that the vessel has been running for 18 years with the present manning, and consider the demand unreasonable, but the union states that no cooks would be available until the demand was conceded. The statement concludes: ‘‘ln view of these repeated instances of direct action, the owners have no alternative
but to take action against the union in the Arbitration Court.” APPLICATION TO COURT
At Sydney the shipowners approached the Arbitration Court yesterday and asked that summonses be issued requiring the officials of the Marine Cooks’ Union of Sydney and Melbourne to appear before the Court on Friday next. The owners’ application asks for the determination of the award and the insertion of a clause prohibiting members of the Cooks’ Union from taking part, and also asks for the suspension of the award if the members of the Marine Cooks’ Union join any strike.
