LOWER WAIKATO NOTES

CHILDREN’S BALL AT HUNTLY The annual children’s ball took place on Tuesday evening:. The Town Hall was packed, and presented a joyous carnival air. The various costumes, fancy and humorous, from oldtime to'modern, blended together in Pretty fashion amid the hum and excitement of the occasion. Truly it was “playtime” in school parlance. Dancing- ranged from the dignified minuet of a suitably gowned bevy of schoolgirls. to the more blatant and free stepping charleston by their elders. Judging by the interested faces of the small fry, it will not be long before the minuet is forgotten and another style adopted, for to be up-to-date is the ruling passion. Over 300 children attended, and the task of* picking out the winners was not only an unenviable one, but extremely difficult. The decisions of the judges were well received, and though many were disappointed, as was to be expected for such large entries, while Mr. Geo. Smith, chairman of the School Committee, presented the prizes to the more fortunate ones, the cheering and applause was distinctly significant of the popularity of the selections. Later in the evening the adults had their turn, and dancing was carried on till the early hours. The music was in the hands of Miss Burden, and Mr. J. Roberts (.violins). Messrs. Stan. Smith (cornet), Dobson (piano), Lawson (trombone), and Alick Smith (side drums, etc.). Supper was served in the large rooms under the stage, and the School Committee, teachers and parents are to be roundly congratulated on their efforts in making such an outstanding success of the annual function. In that connection Mr. Will Edgerley, headmaster, and his chief of staff, Mr. A. Stewart, are entitled to a warm word for their energetic work as reflected in the general tone and bearing of the children.
