LEADING THE WAY ONCE AGAIN

SPORTING VENTURES OF OWNER MCKENZIE LEAD TO SUCCESS The success that has attended the colours of Mr. J. R. McKenzie since the Wellington sportsman’s entry to the sport is a fitting reward for his enterprise. Right from the moment he decided to unfurl a set of racing colours, he has endeavoured to procure the beat horses of both gaits to carry his livery. PRICE NO OBJECT And price has never weighed with him. In his desire to maintain the standard set, he has purchased horses from America, and when suitable material has been available in New Zealand he has never hesitated to secure those also. Hence, it is little wonder that he heads the list of winning owners. Mr. McKenzie’s total for the year about to close is £5,545. Last year he collected prize money to the tune of £7,530. BREEDING THE BEST His chief contributor is Great Bingen, whose excellent performances earned his owner £2,775. Besides retaining a big establishment for the training and racing of the horses, Mr. McKenzie has taken up the breeding side of the sport. Last year he imported that great sire, Peter Chenault. and purchased several classy mares to mate with the aristocrat from U.S.A. OTHER WINNERS Apart from the winnings of the champion pacer, Great Bingen, the Wellington sportsman’s fine total received assistance in its compilation from the square-gaited performers, Peter Swift (three wins), Real the Great and Frisco Beau (two wins each) and the pacers. Silk Thread and Great Actress, who won a heat each in the McKenzie livery. TRAINER'S PART The popular trainer, D. Withers, is justly entitled to a share of the credit for the fine position obtained by the Wellington owner-breeder. Withers is a most capable, energetic and painstaking mentor, and the success achieved with the team proves that he knows his work and fully understands his charges. The McKenzie-Withers conir bination threatens to be a most powerful on © in the light-harness history of the Dominion for many a year.
