ELECTRIC POWER IN SOUTH ISLAND
GOVERNMENT ALERT SURVEY OF THE WAITAKI (THU SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. It is evident that the Government is keeping an eye upon the electric - power requirements of the South Island, and departmental officials declare that the day is not far away—in fact nearer than many suppose—when the demand for power In the South will be so great that the suggested new hydro scheme between Christchurch and Dunedin will have to be installed. A survey has been made and borings carried out in the vicinity of the Waitaki River, from which it is proposed to build the dam, and further operations are being executed at the present time. The extraordinary rapidity with which the load at Coleridge has been taken up is giving rise to the belief in the Public Works Department that the new scheme will be wanted in the near future. The hundred per cent, extension which was made at Coleridge some time ago is, it is stated here, already more than half loaded.
