Hockey Tourney at Remuera

PROGRESS OF COMPETITION SOME LIVELY CONTESTS Marred by heavy rain and sodden playing areas, the second round of matches in the V hite Horse Cup series was played at Remuera yesterdav afternoon. In spite of the adverse* weather conditions, a fair number of spectators turned out, and were rewarded by witnessing some exciting contests. The game of the day was the fixture between Whangarei and Rodney, which proved to be one of the fastest and most strenuous battles played on No. 1 ground for some time. After a ding-dong struggle, Whangarei emerged victorious by 4-1, although the game was much more evenly contested than the scores indicated. Whangarei and Piako are in the lead with two wins each, while the cupholder, Waipa, has gone down two points by its two drawn games. WHANGAREI OVERCOMES RODNEY The teams: Whangarei.—Postlewaite, Salmon, Hewlett, Johnson, Byles, Johns, Tupp, Draffin, Warin, Sloane, Hannan. Rodney.—Thomlinson, Croaker, Wyatt, R. Smith, J. Smith, A. Torkington, G. Hood, A. Toovey, T. Grimmer, J. Goertz, C. Matthew. From the bully off Whangarei made a determined assault, with Hannan and Hewlett prominent, but Croaker stopped the rush on the edge of the circle. Play then swung back and forward at a terrific pace, with little to choose. It was then Rodney’s turn to attack, and Matthew charged down the line, with Goertz and Grimmer in support, but Salmon broke up the effort. Then Whangarei was cornered, but Postlewaite saved brilliantly. Another corner followed, but Tupp cleared. Rodney again sallied forth, but Johnson, in co-operation with Tupp, saved the blue jerseys. Goertz and Grimmer were associated in a pretty passing bout, and reached the circle edge, but Salmon drove clear. Whangarei then set sail again, but over-anxiety spoiled a likely attack. Matthew and Goertz set Rodney in motion, but Byles intercepted, and sent to Warin, who charged down the line, and passed to Plewlett, but Rodney’s backs were equal to the occasion. A snappy movement by Rodney’s van then took up the attack, and reached the Whangarei circle. Goertz was on the spot, and, following in, netted brilliantly amid great excitement, from the side-line, but the goal was disallowed owing to an infringement by a Whangarei man. Shortly afterwards half-time was sounded without any score. After the adjournment matters were evenly discussed, until Rodney’s attacking party made a brilliant breakaway from the right wing. A nice pass to Goertz saw the inside left send a hot one into th,e net from close quarters, but another Rodney man was offside, and nothing resulted. Give-and-take play followed at a fast and furious pace. A vigorous sortie by Whangarei reached the Rodney circle, where Hewlett received a pass from his inside left man, and netted with a hard shot from short range. Whangarei 1, Rodney 0. Rodney retaliated with a dashing flank attack, and Grimmer essayed a hard drive from a difficult angle, but his shot flashed a foot outside the goalpost. Shortly afterwards a fine passing rush, with Hannan and Hewlett prominent, saw Whangarei’s van invade Rodney’s territory, and Warin made no mistake. Whangarei 2, Rodney 0. Shortly afterwards a similar eifort saw Hewlett draw Rodney’s goalie, and he pushed an easy one into the cage. Whangarei 3, Rodney 0. Scrambling play followed for 10 minutes, with little to choose between the contestants, until Hewlett scored again bv drawing Wyatt. Soon after Rodney had a chance when Whangarei was cornered, and Grimmer found the net with a terrific shot, which completely beat Postlewaite. The final whistle saw Whangarei the winners by 4 to 1. Mr. L. G. Crawshaw was referee. WHITE HORSE CUP Tauranga, 3 (Green 1, Punch 1, Turner 1), drew with King Country, 3 (Fanthorpe 1, Winger 1, McAllister 1). Waipa, 1 (Finch 1), drew with Whakatane, 1 (Kelly 1). Piako, 3 (Eastwood 2, Harvey 1), defeated Franklin, 1 (Robinson 1). N.Z.
