HABITUAL CRIMINAL AND FOUR YEARS’ GAOL
A CAREER OF CRIME MAN FROM HAMILTON A list of eight previous convictions, mostly for breaking and entering and theft, did not stand Archibald Arthur Andrew Scott in very good stead when he appeared before his Honour Mr. Justice Reed this morning on six charges of theft, three of breaking and entering and theft; one of breaking and entering with intent, one he had pleaded guilty in the lower of false pretences, to all of which court at Hamilton, Prisoner, who was described as a labourer, and formerly a marine engineer, apparently realised the futility of making a plea, contenting himself with an expression of regret and a desire to “get the business over.” He pointed out, however, that he had not been convicted in Invercargill, as stated in the list, his association with that town being merely confined to a sentence he had served there. His Honour: But did you not break out of gaol while you were there, and receive an additional year? Prisoner admitted the fact. His Honour said that the prisoner was evidently determined to carry on with that sort of life, and for the safety of the community it would be necessary to put him in a place of safety. Prisoner was declared an habitual criminal, and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment..
