WORK ON RAILWAY

Stratford Main Trunk l

HUGE SLIPS AT TUNNEL

As far a c can he pitimater! at present, and provided the weather does not interfere unduly with the work of clearing the slips ?t the Okahnkura tunnel on i the StratforH Main Trunk riilwav, the -line will be ready for resumption of goods service by May 8. Vi Two huge slips brought down during the heavy rains of a few weeks ago block each end of the tunnel. The slip on the Ohura side has been cleared and the rails which were torn up have been relaid to the tunnel. A layer of silt about 2 feet deep was. deposited through the tunnel. A section of 10 chains of the tunnel at the Ohura end has been cleared. At the Okahukura end debris has been removed to within a chain of the entrance of the tunnel. At the Ohura end day and night shifts are being worked by large gangs of men. Washed in from the Ohura entrance for 40 chains there lies in the tunnel a log a chain long and 2ft. in diameter. Once the men reach it, however, the log is not expected to give much trouble. So far no accurate estimation of the date on which passenger service will be commenced is available.
