ALLEGED BOOKMAKING

Rotorua, April 14.—0 n a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker on' February 2, the first day of the Rotorua races, Hori Mau agent, Rotorua, was on Thursday fined £250. Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., said that Mau had a number of previous convictions which apparently had not acted as a deterrent, as he had persisted in his illegal business in defiance of the ' A charge of issuing a double chart and aiding and abetting Joe Plamus to carry on the business of a bookmaker was brought against Albert James Brown, but after hearing the evidence the magistrate said that the material difference in the evidence of the police witnesses made it unsafe to convict.
