RESEARCH WORK IN ENGLAND

Visit to Universities

Press Association. —Copyright. Wellington. April 13.— English uni : vcrsitios and scientific research establishments in Great Britain were visited by Professor R. Jack, Professor of Physics at Otago University, who returned dv the Rangitata, which arrived at Wellington from London yesterday. On several occasions Professor Jack met Lord Rutherford, and at Cambridge he saw the apparatus used to split the atom. Professor Jack also visited the National Phvsic Laboratory and was greatly impressed with what he saw there. One ot the features of the laboratory was the building for testing sound in which no two walls were at right angles. Even the ceiling was at an unusual angle. One wall was completely isolated from the others and rested on rubber. There were not even any pipes or wires leading into it. . He also saw at Teddinglon the tanks in which ship models were tested. The work being done was wonderful, he said, and very interesting. The lessons learned were of invaluable value in reducing costs and resistance.
