GOATS ON THE MOUNTAIN

Suggested Shooting Drive EAST COMMITTEE'S - PROPOSAL The goat nuisance on the mountain reserves was briefly referred to at last night's meeting of the East Committee of the Egmont National Park Board. It was decided to approach the Park Board asking for permission to conduct a drive for the destruction' of the pests. The chairman (Mr. J. C. Robins) said that during the last month the caretaker had shot eight goats in the bush on the far side of the Te Popo stream. Recently the caretaker and a party which he had conducted to the north side had seen a mob of approximately 200 goats cross the circular, track and had gone into the scrub lower down in the vicinity of the Waiwakaiho stream. The committee decided to approach the National Park Board for permission to organise drives to destroy the goats. It was explained that experienced gunmen would take part in the proposed drives, which would be organised and conducted by the caretaker (Mr. A. Haldane), who has a thorough knowledge of the area to be worked.
