GOLF

o WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON, Thursday. An outstanding feature of the opening day of the Wellington provincial golf championship tournament on the Hull links to-day was a brilliant round of 72 by A. .1. Shaw, New Zealand open champion. Shaw went out in 35 and home in 37. Hitting a long ball off the tees, he was good enough to win the first prize (£7) in the professional bogey match, his card showing 3 up. The open champion did not fare so well in the medal match in the afternoon, in which he took 78. This event resulted in a tie between A. Dyke (Hutt) and J. R. Galloway (Palmerston North), both of whom did a nett 72, H. N. Fuller (New Zealand Golf Association), J. Lambie (New Plymouth) and L. Ross coming next with a nett 73 each. Among the amateurs Raua Wagg (Hutt) retained the Winter Cup with rounds of 80 and 75, H. K. Adamson (Waiwetu) and L. Buist (Hutt) being equal for second place with 159. H. A. Black, New Zealand amateur champion, took 162 and J. Goss (Wanganui) an ex-national champion, 163. The Wellington provincial professional championship over 36 holes will also be decided to-morrow. In the draw Shaw meets Fuller.
