SURPRISE FOR THE HOUSE
IMPORTANT EXEMPTIONS
CANBERRA. July 3D.
Unexpectedly, the Prime Minister introduced the Sales Tax Bill in the House of Representatives to-day. The tax, which will come into operation on August 1. will he paid on tho sale value of goods. Important exemptions are cigarettes, newspapers, petrol, household water, gas, meat, bread, beer, fertilisers, electricity, flour, dairy produce, primary products and boxes and crates.
The general scheme, Mr Scullin' explained is that this tax shall be paid by the hist vendor of goods to retailer or direct to tho consumer. Coupled with the necessity to levy tho tax in respect to all imnprted goods, the Bill also requires that tho retailor who imports tho goods shall pay the tax at tho time of entry.
