FIRST AIR MAIL ROBBERY
Chicago: outrage, REGISTERED MAIL STOLEN. BANDITS SECURE LARGE SUM. (United P.A. Electric Telegraph-, Copyright). (Received 11.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 18. A Chicago message states the first air mail robbery occurred when, a plane alighted on a landing ground almost in the heart of the city. The pilot stepped out to lift five hags of registered mail out, and found himself stating into guns held by two robbers who relieved him of his entire load, worth about £IOOO. They quickly escaped in a car. Another bold robbery occurred at Portland when two bandits entered a bank carrying a lunch box which contained ropes. They trussed the employees and secured £2OOO in hank notes, but overlooked four thousand in gold coin.
