LETTER, SENT TO PRIME MINISTER, NO REASON FOR CRITICISM OF CENTRAL COMMITTEE, WELLINGTON, This Day. As chairman of the Central Earthquake Committee, Sir Joseph Ward has received a letter fflora Messrs McLean, chairman Karamea Relief Committee; Stewart, chairman, Murchison Relief Committee; Fraser, secretary Murchison Relief Committee, assuring him that in view of the criticism levelled against the committee and that with full knowledge of the conditions existing in those areas and With the procedure of the committee any delay was unavoidable and further entirely necessary, as no definite action could be taken until full details were available by the dommittee. “This, of course,” says the letter, “does not apply to the matter of dealing with urgent cases of distress, and with gratitude we recognise the promptitude of the committee in handling all such cases submitted to it.” Further the letter stated that they deprecate any criticism which might tend t 0 lessen the flow of the much needed relief funds, which in the aggregate must amount to fierylarge sums.
