EARLY MORNING BLAZE DOES MUCH DAMAGE

FIRE HAS GOOD HOLD WHEN BRIGADE ARRIVES FLAMES SPREAD TO ADJOINING PREMISES, The fire brigade was called cut at 4.55 this morning to deal ■with an outbreak of lire in the premises of ah* ll.'Hawke, hairdresser and tobacconist, opposite the County Hotel.

The lire had a good hold when the brigade arrived, but they quickly got t'o work, and managed to confine the chief damage to Mr Hawkefsj premises. The upstair’s portion of the building, occupied by Mr H. Ruscoe, tailor, was also badly gutted. The fire penetrated to the upstairs portion of Messrs Bellringer Bros.’ premises, next door, where considerable damage was done, especially amlong the stock of wall-paper. Damage by smoke and water was also done t'o the downstair’s portion of Messrs Bellringers’ shop, but the northern portion was untouched. Some damage was done hy Are running under the roofing iron. The insurances on Mr Hawke’s

premises, which are owned by Mr Veale, are nolti available. Mr Hawke had his stock and fittings insured for £IOOO in the Eagle, Star and British Dominions Office. Messrs Bellringer Bros, have their stock apd building insured for about £4OOO in the Royal and Prudental Offices.
